Competition Rules


1. General Rules

  • Each team will be required to compete in 9 different exercises, which comprise the following marine-related areas:
    • Seamanship
    • Emergency Management
    • Shiphandling/Navigation
    • Offshore Operations
    • Dynamic Positioning
    • Search and Rescue
    • Marine Emergency Duties
    • Engineering Shop
    • Engine Room Simulation
  • Only four  members of your team can participate in any one exercise
  • Where possible, a 1st, 2nd and 3rd/4th year student must participate in every exercise, if the team has at least 1 student from each year. Failure to do so will result in the team losing 10 marks, from each exercise score, for each exercise where the rule is not followed.
  • Every team member must participate in at least one exercise. Failure to do so will result in the team losing 5 marks, from the exercise score, for each of the team’s exercises.
  • 1-2 minute safety moment is required at the start of every exercise
    • Each safety moment must apply to the exercise in which you are competing.
    • Every team member must participate in at least one safety moment. Failure to do so will result in the team not being considered for the safety award.
  • The exercise begins after completion of the safety moment; teams have 45 minutes to complete the task(s)
  • Each team must fill out a sign-in sheet before commencing each exercise. Failure to properly fill out the sign-in sheet will result in the team losing 10 marks, from both the exercise score and safety moment score, for each exercise where the sheet is not properly filled out.

2. Briefing Night (February 6, 2026)

  • Registration and briefing @ 1700 in the cafeteria (food provided)
  • Marine Emergency Duties exercise @ 1800 in the MI gymnasium
  • Exercise briefing @ 1930 @ Simulator/Exercise stations
    • Exercise leads will brief you on the equipment to be used in the exercise
    • 1-hour concurrent session only
  • For safety protocols, only 2 members of your team can attend any one session
  • Students are allowed to take notes and bring them into the competition exercises
  • Briefing night ends @ 2030

3. Competition Day (February 7, 2026)

  • 8 Exercises
  • 0800 start
  • Lunch will be provided @ 1200 for participants and volunteers in Cafeteria
  • 1700 finish
  • 1830 Reception (Cafeteria)
  • 1930 Gala Awards Dinner (Cafeteria)
